Myofascial Somatics is a gentle approach that works with the body to release long held restrictions in the connective tissue, while also re-educating the neuromuscular system to restore optimal range of motion, improve posture and reduce pain. You will gain conscious awareness of how you move in your body which allows the benefits you receive to stay with you for a lifetime.
Therapeutic Movement
As a practicing Kinesiologist for over 20 years, I have specialized in chronic disease and chronic pain management. My approach to movement is mindful, compassionate and meets your body exactly where it is at.

The simplest exercises can make worlds of difference - often allowing you to reduce pain medications, gain function in your daily life and even avoid or prolong the need for surgeries - simply by learning how to bring more consciousness to how you are moving your body.

I designed the FREE YOUR BODY Program because I see so many people suffering in pain when it doesn't have to be that way. Myofascial release and somatic movement therapy are revolutionary approaches to chronic pain management that get to the root cause of why you are in pain in the first place. I am excited to share them with you!

FREE YOUR BODY is designed to:

Weeks 1 - 3 | October 8, 15, 22
Free Your Hips

Let's start at the ground and work our way up. The first three weeks will focus on learning the fundamentals of myofascial release and somatic movement while focusing on grounding you into this healing experience. These sessions will focus on freeing the hips, which connect to the base of your spine, the foundation that supports your entire body. You can expect to feel more grounded as you learn why creating safety in the body is a fundamental need for releasing long held tension.

Wednesday October 29 - Integration week (no classes)

Weeks 4 - 6 | November 5, 12, 19
Free Your Back

Next, we will move up into the back, focusing on releasing tension through the low back, core and spinal column. You will deepen your practice as you learn how to free the spine, improve your posture and relieve back pain. You can expect to feel more empowered as you get better at listening to the language of your body to guide your healing journey.

Wednesday November 26 - Integration week (no classes)

Weeks 7 - 9 | December 3, 10, 17
Free Your Neck & Shoulders

We end off this series by focusing our attention on opening up the heart, freeing the shoulders and releasing tension in the neck. You will start to feel a deeper sense of compassion for your body and all that it has been through. By now, you will have a greater understanding that tension in the hips also leads to tension in the shoulders and that a holistic whole body practice is beneficial for all sorts of aches and pains. My hope is that you now have the tools and practices you need to continue on your healing journey with confidence!
Sessions are held at Joyful Movement Studio | 5212 51 Ave Camrose, Alberta Canada

Why Myofascial Release Therapy and Somatic Movement Education?
Myofasical release and somatic movement truly get to the root cause of why tension is being held in the body in the first place and both techniques work holistically with the body on a mental, emotional and physical level.

Myofasical release works by applying gentle pressure to the body using small therapy balls, meeting the body where it is at. There is no painful pushing or forcing through restrictions. Myofascial release therapy meets the tissue at its barrier and then waits for the tissue to change form. This is what makes myofascial release so effective. It creates a shift in the tissue from its hardened restricted state back to its natural gel-like state.

Somatic movement is a mindfulness based form of movement that allows you to gain conscious connection to how you are moving in your body. Old accidents, injuries, repetitive movement patterns and even emotional traumas can cause the body to form holding patterns that eventually lead to pain. Somatic movement re-educates the body by teaching it to gain full access to all of the possibilities for movement, allowing that old holding pattern to soften.

Each session you will be led through mindfulness practices that connect you with the wisdom of your body, self myofascial release techniques using small therapy balls to release your tissues and simple movement patterns
that re-educate your muscles, bringing your body back into optimal alignment.
At the heart of all of this is the practice of mindful compassionate curiosity.

Together, we will be present with what is arising in your own experience of the mind, body and emotions from a place of non-judgement and with a spirit of curiosity. The path of healing really is a path of learning, in my practice - the wisdom of your body leads the way.

Hi, I'm Kristen!
I believe we all have the ability to heal ourselves. My approach is empowering because you are engaged in the process so you can embody the changes happening during the session. While it can take time to work through layers of tension, the goal is to set you up for success with a home healing plan so you can experience long lasting change. This work is designed to create profound healing shifts, as long as you stay engaged in the process. When you keep up with your healing plan, the shifts will last a lifetime!

Frequently asked questions:

What is the difference between massage therapy and myofascial release therapy?
  • Massage therapy focuses on relaxing muscles and easing tension using oils, strokes, and pressure. Myofascial release is different — it uses gentle, sustained holds (without oils) over time to create a physical transformation in the fascia tissue. Other myofascial techniques I use include: unwinding - a neuromuscular re-patterning technique and rebounding - a gentle rocking of the body to help re-set the nervous system and re-hydrate the previously restricted tissues.
What is myofascia?
  • Myo means muscle and fascia is the connective tissue web that surrounds everything in the body. So "myofascia" means the fascia that specifically moves through the muscular system. This work helps relieve pain, restore movement, and at times can support emotional release.
Is myofascial release painful?
  • While some forms of myofascial release can be painful, I was trained in the John F. Barnes approach, which is a non-violent approach to working with the body. The body cannot heal itself if it doesn't feel safe. Fasica tissue restricts when in pain, preventing release from happening. The approach I use is to meet the body at its first barrier - not forcing or pushing - and we wait there for the release to naturally happen on its own. Your body is wise and knows what it needs. It's my job to listen to what wants to happen next.
Are your services covered by insurance?
  • While most plans do not cover Kinesiology services, you can check with your insurance provider to see if you may be covered under a health spending account. My credentials are a Masters of Kinesiology and Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology - Clinical Exercise Physiologist.
What is the difference between Kinesiology and Physiotherapy?
  • Physiotherapy focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating injuries or conditions to restore function. It often includes assessment to determine what structures are injured as well as hands-on therapy, exercise programs, and medical rehabilitation.
Kinesiology is the study of human movement. I focus on the quality of how you are moving in your body and provide guidance to support your overall health and wellness.
  • If you have recently been injured or are involved in an active WCB claim, I recommend seeking Physiotherapy treatment. I do not diagnose or treat acute injuries. My work is focused on restoring optimal movement patterns and relieving more chronic forms of tension in the body.
